What is the wire gauge, would you estimate, of the wire in a plastic baggie tie?
Some sidewalls for your time.

40?

I’d guess something like 24.

calipers say .022 so with paper, maybe 44- 46 gauge.

Ga rden grade or grocery store grade?

Hey: I have a digital vernier caliper... Thanks for reminding me.

Seriously? No one has asked WHY?!?
There is information missing tha t I MUST know!

I am making a prototype cloth mask for nurses to wear in the hospital and I need wire to form the mask around the bridge of the nose. I’ll buy insulated solid core copper wire, but I need to get the gauge right before I order a 200-ft roll.

This may not be much help to you, but I know the DIY crowd are using pipe cleaners. My mom is making some

That seems way small. Cat5 is 24awg and feels smaller that a bag tie.

24awg is .050" od (with insulation) . conductor is .02"
I was thinking standard wire g au ge

Derp moment. I forgot about the individual insulation.

Is it mall eable though?

My wife is using paper clips and they seem to work well.

That’s a good idea.

I was thinking closer to 20 or 22, maybe you have different twist ties than I do?
Keep in mind copp
er will be softer than steel.
![]() 03/29/2020 at 11:27 |

Yes, softer. I believe the paper masks use aluminum. I’m making masks for family and friends, some of whom are nurses.

Formable, but if your aim is to flatten it you'll find it more difficult. It will not be nearly as susceptible to breaking from being bent multiple times as copper wire would be.

The masks I’ve seen with wire in them appear to be aluminum. I’m thinking that a 20- or 22-gauge insulated, solid core copper wire would be easy to work with and wouldn’t rust.
